From Anthony Filiberti, winemaker: "This is another "young vine" section of the Peugh vineyard planted 90 years ago to equal parts Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet and petite sirah. It's a long sad story but since you asked... Phil Bertoli was leasing and farming the vineyard for the last 30 years, he sadly passed away unexpectedly the day before harvesting. His children, who weren't involved in the farming business took over last minute and delivered our Peugh block and mistakenly the Bertoli block to me. Frankly I didn't have it in me to refuse the grapes. So I made the wine which was less ripe, into a carbonic styled red. It's gorgeous and very elegant and textured at around 12% alcohol. This was bottled after 7 months in neutral large oak puncheons, and labeled as mixed blacks as we changed the name of the Peugh to mixed reds after Bertoli was bottled." Alicante Bouschet 20%, Carignane 20%, Grenache 20%, Mourvèdre 20% og Zinfandel 20%.
Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
Peugh Vineyard is a historic site originally planted in the heart of the Russian River over 100 years ago. This is a field blend and all the fruit is harvested together in one pass. This is a throwback to the early decades of vine growing done in California that is now becoming the norm once more. The fruit is organically grown and dry farmed with just 300 cases made.
